Marius appeal : Highland MSP calls for further support

Highlands and Islands Regional Labour MSP David Stewart has made a further call for support for Inverness Caley Thistle signing Marius Niculae, whose initial application for a work permit was refused by the Home Office.

Mr Stewart, a keen Caley Thistle supporter and club trustee said, “When Marius recently signed for the club, like many fans, I was delighted given his experience and talent as a player, which included playing for Romania’s national team on 28 occasions.

“However, Marius did not meet a Home Office requirement for a footballer’s work permit and his application was refused – as he has not played for his country in at least 75% of its competitive ‘A’ team matches, during the two years preceding the application.

“The refusal of the work permit was based on guidelines for an initial application but I am aware that there have been many precedents of even internationally unknown non-EU players with no links to the UK being granted work permits.

“Last Friday I launched an e-petition in support of Marius seeking signatures from Inverness Caley Thistle supporters.

“The response was tremendous and the site has now logged over 1,400 on-line signatures.

“Maruis’s work permit application is now subject of an appeal tomorrow (Wednesday) and I would again call on all Caley Thistle fans, to not only sign the petition themselves, but to encourage family and friends to do likewise.

“I also wrote to Jacqui Smith, a former Westminster colleague and current Home Secretary calling on her to intervene to support Marius’s case.

“I would hope that when the appeal tribunal sits that they examine all the facts of the case closely, including precedents already set and the level of support for Marius in and around Inverness.

“Marius has a key role to play in Caley Thistle’s future and deserves our support.

“I trust common sense will win the day tomorrow and a work permit be granted. “
