David Stewart MSP

Promotion for North MSP

David Stewart, Highlands and Islands Labour MSP, is being named as Labour’s Shadow Minister for the Environment and Climate Change.

Mr Stewart, who is currently an opposition whip in the Scottish Parliament, is replacing Des McNulty in the environment post – Mr McNulty is moving to transport.

A former MP for Inverness, Nairn and Lochaber (he was a Private Parliamentary Secretary in Westminster), Mr Stewart was elected as a regional MSP for the Highlands and Islands area in 2007.

“I am delighted to accept this new responsibility from Wendy Alexander and I look forward to working with Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs, the Environment and Climate Change Sarah Boyack,” he said.

“The environment and climate change are the most important issues facing not just Scotland but the world. I have already been exploring a number of related issues as part of my role on the Transport, Infrastructure and Climate Change Committee and I look forward to the challenges ahead which face us all.”

Prior to election to the Scottish Parliament Mr Stewart was Assistant Director for Rural Affairs with the SCVO based in Inverness.
