Parliament support for offshore transmission line

David Stewart, MSP for the Highlands and Islands, has secured the First Minister’s support in the Scottish Parliament to the principle of an offshore transmission line to distribute renewable energy from Highlands and Islands communities.

Mr Stewart urged Mr Salmond to support an ongoing Crown Estate study into the development of an offshore undersea east coast transmission line to allow renewable energy to be distributed around the UK and to Europe.

“It is vital that we pursue this research in the knowledge that if it becomes a reality ministers approving wind farm developments in the Highlands and Islands communities will have assured transmission capacity.

“This will allow us to develop our renewables industry and help Scotland as a whole to meet climate change targets,” said Mr Stewart.

“I welcome the First Minister’s acknowledgement that sea-borne transmission could play a key role for the North East of Scotland and that he agrees with me that this study should be progressed,” said Mr Stewart.
