Thousands living with Prediabetes in the Highlands

11 November 2009

David Stewart, Highlands and Islands regional Labour MSP, is urging the Scottish Government to do more to help those in Highlands who are living with prediabetes.

Latest figures reveal hundred of thousands of people across the country are living with the condition.

Mr Stewart said: “The latest information from Diabetes UK suggest that there are 37,500 people living with pre diabetes across the NHS Highland area alone.

“If left untreated, this could progress to Type 2 diabetes.

“At the moment, there is under recording and resources available to prevent the condition turning to Type 2.

” Changing lifestyles, diets and physical activity levels can all go towards helping people.”

Mr Stewart added: “It is vital that the Scottish government play their part to do help identify these people and help to provide them with the means to tackle the condition before it has a huge impact on their lives.”
